Chignik Bay residents now have access to GCI’s 2.5 gig consumer internet speeds

Chignik Bay is the sixth community connected through GCI’s Aleutians Fiber Project

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The remote community of Chignik Bay now has access to fiber-optic service and 2.5 gig consumer internet speeds! Located on the Alaska Peninsula, 450 miles southwest of Anchorage, Chignik Bay is the sixth community in the region to gain access to urban level internet speeds, plans and pricing through GCI’s Aleutians Fiber Project.

In preparation for fiber-optic connectivity in the community, Aleutians Fiber Project crews deployed brand new fiber-to-the-premises networks in Chignik, connecting homes and businesses to the region’s 800+ mile subsea fiber backbone.

“It’s exciting to bring urban-level connectivity to another community in the region where I grew up,” said GCI Rural Affairs Senior Director Jenifer Nelson. “Whether it’s in Chignik Bay or my hometown of King Cove, access to fiber-optic internet truly is transformative and opens up so many opportunities for Alaskans in rural and remote communities. From improved access to education and healthcare to economic opportunities and entertainment, this project is helping make life even better in the Aleutians!”

In addition to Chignik Bay, GCI has also launched 2.5 gig consumer internet speeds in Akutan, King Cove, Larsen Bay, Sand Point and Unalaska through the Aleutians Fiber Project. Project teams are preparing to begin initial network testing in Port Lions and Ouzinkie.

The Aleutians Fiber Project, when completed, will bring fiber connectivity and urban internet service to 13 communities on Kodiak Island, the Alaska Peninsula, and the south side of the Aleutian Chain. It was funded through generous grants by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development ReConnect and Community Connect programs, as well as more than $50 million in private funding by GCI.
