GCI announces more than $5 million in 5G upgrades in Fairbanks with more on the horizon
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Wireless 5G service is expanding in Fairbanks! GCI, Alaska’s largest telecom provider, recently upgraded its eighth 5G-capable wireless site in the Interior Alaska’s largest community, extending the service throughout much of the city. GCI has invested approximately $5.2 million, so far, in its Fairbanks 5G deployment and expects to bring more 5G-capable sites online in the community by the end of the year.
GCI was the first provider to launch true 5G NR service in Alaska when it turned up 5G service in Anchorage in 2020 and continues to strengthen its 5G footprint in additional communities.
“Our team has been working steadily for the past three years to bring 5G mobile service to more Alaska communities and we’re very proud to grow our 5G wireless footprint in the land of the midnight sun,” said GCI Senior Staff Program Manager Chris Galipeau. “We’re not done yet. We plan to bring even more 5G wireless sites online in Fairbanks later this year.”
In addition to Fairbanks, GCI has also made substantial 5G investments in Anchorage, Eagle River, Girdwood, Juneau, Palmer and Wasilla over the past three years. Each 5G-capable site is outfitted to utilize GCI’s low-band and mid-band radio spectrum combination to deliver major improvements in speed and coverage, particularly in-building coverage.
