GCI launches 5G mobile service in Akutan
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Akutan now has GCI 5G wireless service and unlimited mobile data! The upgrade brings residents of the remote Aleutian community the same lightning-fast data speeds and reliable voice service as customers experience in Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city.
In addition to 5G mobile service, Akutan residents also have access to 2.5 gig consumer internet speeds, which launched earlier this year in the community as part of GCI’s Aleutians Fiber Project.
“The launch of both 5G mobile service and 2.5 gig residential internet speeds in Akutan is life changing,” said Senior Director of GCI Rural Affairs Jenifer Nelson. “When we talk about the importance of closing the digital divide and how transformative these technologies can be, communities like Akutan are exactly what we have in mind.”
GCI was the first provider in Alaska to launch true 5G coverage in 2020. Today, GCI offers 5G mobile service in more than a dozen communities, ranging from Alaska’s most populous areas, like Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, to some of its most remote, like Akutan, Unalaska, Nome and Kotzebue. Over the past 40 years, GCI has invested more than $4 billion in its statewide network. More than 97 percent of Alaskans live within GCI’s network footprint.
