GCI launches first 5G wireless sites in the Matanuska Valley

GCI expects to have 10 5G sites on air in the area by March 2022

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – GCI’s lightning-fast 5G wireless service has made it to the Mat-Su! Continuing the expansion of its 5G wireless network, GCI, Alaska’s largest telecommunications company, recently launched the first of its upgraded sites in Palmer and Wasilla. So far, GCI has turned up one 5G site in each community and will bring additional sites online in the coming months.

GCI expects to launch a total of 10 5G wireless sites in the Mat-Su by late Spring 2022. GCI was the first provider to launch true 5G NR service in Alaska when it turned up 5G service in Anchorage in 2020. GCI customers in Anchorage saw immediate results with download speeds twice as fast as AT&T and 75% fewer dropped calls. The GCI team expects Valley customers to experience similar results.

“We’re excited to bring Alaska’s fastest wireless service to Alaska’s fastest growing region,” said GCI Chief Customer Experience Officer Maureen Moore. “The upgrade to 5G in the Mat-Su will provide our customers with access to the best wireless speeds, coverage, and performance available. And not only does this project bring revolutionary 5G service to the area, but it also delivers significant improvements to GCI’s LTE network. That means customers don’t need a 5G-capable phone to experience the benefits.”

Each 5G-capable site is outfitted with specialized equipment to utilize GCI’s low-band and mid-band radio spectrum, driving major improvements in speed and coverage, particularly in-building coverage.
