GCI strengthens wireless footprint in Southeast Alaska
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – GCI customers in Petersburg now have access to 5G mobile service! The upgrade is the latest of GCI’s efforts to bolster its wireless footprint throughout Alaska’s Panhandle. So far in 2025, GCI has improved mobile coverage in five Southeast Alaska communities and expects to upgrade more sites in the region in the coming months.
In addition to the launch of 5G in Petersburg, GCI’s 2025 upgrades include two new 5G sites in Ketchikan and significant improvements to LTE coverage in Kake, Metlakatla and Thorne Bay.
“We’re thrilled to launch 5G mobile service in Petersburg and strengthen our wireless footprint in Southeast Alaska,” said GCI Marketing Director Leah Scholz. “With these upgrades, customers in these five communities will experience faster data speeds and more reliable mobile service – and we’re not stopping here. More wireless improvements are on the way!”
GCI expects to upgrade network equipment in more Southeast Alaska communities later this year, including Craig, Haines and Klawock.
Over the past 45 years, GCI has invested $4.7 billion in its statewide network. GCI was the first provider to launch true 5G NR service in Alaska when it turned up 5G service in Anchorage in 2020 and continues to expand its 5G footprint into more Alaska communities.
