GCI upgrades improve service for wireless customers in Southeast Alaska
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — After GCI’s multi-year effort to improve its wireless network in Southeast Alaska, the company’s customers in Juneau and other communities in the region are experiencing more reliable mobile data service. The improvements will make a noticeable difference in some of the region’s busiest cruise ship ports, including Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Petersburg.
The upgrades include the launch of four 5G wireless sites in Juneau and improved LTE service throughout many Southeast Alaska communities.
“GCI’s wireless upgrades in Juneau and throughout much of Southeast Alaska means a significantly improved mobile experience for our customers in the region,” said GCI Chief Customer Experience Officer Maureen McCabe Moore. “The difference should be especially noticeable during cruise ship season, with the upgrades largely alleviating wireless network congestion sometimes experienced while cruise ships are in port.”
“While the economic benefits for communities are significant, we recognize there are also challenges that arise with bringing visitors into small communities,” said Renée Limoge Reeve, Vice President of Government and Community Relations for Cruise Lines International Association in Alaska. “We’re grateful for the work GCI is doing to help ensure the summer season is a positive experience not just for our visitors, but for the communities and their residents who host us each year.”
Over the past 40 years, GCI has invested more than $4 billion in its statewide network. More than 97 percent of Alaskans live within GCI’s network footprint.
