GCI marks wireless milestone with $10,000 5G Trailblazer Award

GCI partners with Municipality of Anchorage to recognize one outstanding member of the community who embodies “the trailblazer spirit”

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — GCI, Alaska’s largest provider of telecommunications services, has launched Alaska’s first true 5G mobile service—making Anchorage the northernmost 5G-served city in the nation! To honor this milestone, GCI will award $10,000 in cash to one local resident who embodies GCI’s trailblazing spirit by making Anchorage a stronger, better and more connected community.

“Anchorage is filled with creative, community-minded individuals who have, over the years, championed projects and grassroots efforts that improve our quality of life and make people feel more connected,” said Heather Handyside, Vice President of GCI Corporate Communications. "The 5G Trailblazer Award was developed to recognize the efforts of these motivated and often selfless folks who are the heart of our community and embody Alaska’s trailblazing spirit.”

The GCI 5G Trailblazer Award will be awarded in partnership with the Municipality of Anchorage and funded by GCI. The recipient will receive a 5G phone and one year of service from GCI. In addition to the individual cash award, the winner will be able to direct $10,000 to the Anchorage nonprofit of their choice. Nominations will be accepted through Monday, September 21.

“Every day, people design, develop and deploy projects that make Anchorage an even better place to live,” said Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz. “Anchorage grows because we have bold innovators who have the vision, ambition, and persistence to move our city forward. We’re proud to work with GCI to recognize one person who is making our community stronger and more connected.”

Nominees must live in the Municipality of Anchorage to be considered, and should be able to demonstrate commitment to improving their community by spearheading projects, campaigns, or grassroots efforts. Individuals may nominate themselves or others. More details about the nomination process and selection criteria can be found here.

“GCI is dedicated to connecting all Alaskans through technology and innovation. Launching 5G has been our priority and we’ve had an exceptional team working on it with a single-minded focus for two years,” Handyside said. “This award allows us to mark this momentous event by celebrating ingenuity and recognizing the great things happening in our community.”

Nominations will be reviewed by a committee of GCI employees. The 5G Trailblazer Award recipient will be announced in September.
