GCI donation supports Camp Fire Alaska’s Emergency Child Care Program

GCI provides technology resource so students can learn while at Camp Fire Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—GCI announced today it will donate 36 Wi-Fi-enabled Samsung tablets to Camp Fire Alaska, an organization opening its doors to provide childcare for first responders, health care workers and others who have been classified as a critical worker. The tablets will allow the children to continue with schoolwork during this time. Camp Fire Alaska’s emergency child care sites opened Monday, April 6 with locations in Eagle River and Anchorage.

These emergency sites have been established to support those impacted by extended statewide school closures which left many critical workers without daytime child care services. The 36 donated tablets will allow children to participate in online class meetings, read e-books and to allow access to online learning provided by teachers.

“To support Alaska’s students during a time like this is really so important to us,” said GCI Chief Marketing Officer Kate Slyker. “This is just a small way we can help our essential workforce who are on the frontlines fighting this virus. Child care and their children’s education should not be something that keeps them up at night during this already stressful time.”

Camp Fire Alaska, in partnership with the Anchorage School District, opened two emergency child care sites today, April 6, for children in grades K-6 whose families meet the mayor’s criteria for critical workers with priority to first responders and health care workers.

“As much as we know parents love having extra time with their little ‘co-workers’ at home, for workers who are defined as critical, having their children out of school can make getting to work difficult, if not impossible,” said CEO of Camp Fire Alaska Barbara Dubovich. “We are very grateful to be able to provide a safe space for these children while their parents are at work saving lives.”

Camp Fire’s online registration remains open for anyone in the community with children in kindergarten through sixth grade who meets the Mayor’s criteria for critical workers. Thanks to community support and generous individual donations, Camp Fire is offering this service at no cost to families.
