GCI contributes $5,000 to assist with transportation costs for students affected by Stebbins school fire
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — With the school year quickly approaching, students in Stebbins are facing an unexpected challenge after a fire broke out last month in the Western Alaska community’s school building, resulting in the loss of the facility. For the coming school year, Stebbins students will commute to the school in the nearby community of St. Michael. In an effort to ease the burden on the community, GCI, Alaska’s largest telecommunications company, has made a $5,000 charitable contribution to the regional nonprofit Kawerak, Inc. to help fund students’ transportation between Stebbins and St. Michael.
“We hope GCI’s contribution to help students get to their new school provides a measure of relief to students and their families in Stebbins,” said Vice President of GCI Healthcare and Education Annette Jones. “We’re grateful to partner with Kawerak to ensure education remains a top priority as the community works to rebuild their local school.”
Kawerak, Inc. is a nonprofit tribal consortium that provides over 40 different programs to the Inupiaq, St. Lawrence Island Yupik and Yup’ik people who reside in 16 communities of Western Alaska and represents the 20 federally recognized tribes in the Bering Strait Region.
“We appreciate GCI’s efforts to help the Stebbins community affected by the recent fire that claimed the Tukurngailnguq School,” said Mary David, Kawerak Executive Vice President. “Their contribution will help bridge the gap for the students in Stebbins amidst the challenges and changes in the coming school year.”
GCI is one of Alaska’s leaders in corporate philanthropy, donating approximately $2 million each year in cash, products and connectivity to organizations across the state. GCI is committed to giving back to the communities it serves and provides employees with 16 hours of paid leave to volunteer with local organizations.
