GCI contributes $5,500 to Nome Community Center for elder facility improvements
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – GCI is continuing its longtime partnership with the Nome Community Center (NCC) through a $5,500 contribution in 2026 to support critical improvements at the XYZ Senior Center, one of NCC’s key programs serving elders in the Nome community. GCI has provided more than $24,000 to NCC since 2022, supporting programs that enhance quality of life, safety and community connection for residents across the region.
Upgrades to NCC’s XYZ Senior Center will help replace aging furniture and improve safety at the senior center, which serves more than 100 elders and is part of NCC’s broader program and reaches approximately 1,000 people annually.
“Supporting elders is essential to sustaining healthy communities across Alaska,” said Tiffany Vassar, Senior Program Manager of Contributions and Events at GCI. “Our elders are the foundation of our communities, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they are cared for with dignity, respect, and compassion as they age. Our continued investment in the Nome Community Center reflects GCI’s commitment to honoring their experiences, strengthening rural communities, and enhancing the quality of life for those who rely on these vital programs.”
With GCI’s support, NCC plans to purchase 45 new dining chairs to replace deteriorating seating that is no longer comfortable or supportive for elders. The funds will also help cover the purchase of a new high-definition discreet security camera to monitor the dining hall, enhancing staff’s ability to ensure the safety and security of spaces used by seniors.
“The XYZ Senior Center is more than a place for meals, it’s a warm welcoming environment where elders can socialize, stay active, and feel supported and loved,” said Melanie Johnson, Program Manager at the XYZ Senior Center. “The new furniture and security upgrades will significantly improve the daily experience for our elders. Our partnership with GCI not only helps us make these improvements, but also strengthen our community and enhance the lives of Nome’s elder residents and assure their families they are well cared for. We are very grateful for the support from GCI over the years.”
In addition to warm meals, the XYZ Senior Center offers programming designed to support independence, health and social engagement among Nome’s elder population. Learn more about the Nome Community Center and XYZ Senior Center here: https://www.nomecc.org/xyz-senior-center.html.
