GCI hires life-long Alaskan to serve as Senior Vice President Law and Chief Administrative Officer

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – GCI, Alaska’s largest telecommunications provider, today announced that life-long Alaskan Moira Smith will join the company’s leadership team as its Senior Vice President Law and Chief Administrative Officer. In her new role, Smith will direct GCI’s state and federal external affairs strategy, lead the company’s HR department, and oversee its legal and compliance functions.

Smith most recently served as general counsel for ENSTAR Natural Gas, where she led the company's legal, regulatory, and compliance functions since 2012. With a strong commitment to ensuring accessible and reliable energy solutions for Alaskans, Smith played a pivotal role in navigating complex legal transactions and initiatives within the energy sector during her tenure. Before joining ENSTAR, Smith practiced law at Ashburn & Mason where she specialized in litigation, corporate law, and regulatory matters.

“Moira brings years of regulatory experience, strong leadership in state and federal affairs, and deep understanding of how to get things done in this state,” said GCI CEO Ron Duncan. “GCI has been serving Alaskans for more than 45 years, and it is our mission to provide connectivity across the state. We are happy to welcome someone of Moira’s professional caliber and history of commitment to Alaska.”

Smith has demonstrated her commitment to community by serving on the boards of the Alaska Humanities Forum, the American Lung Association, Perseverance Theatre, and Standing Together Against Rape (STAR), and as a volunteer with the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Group and the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence. Smith has also served as mentor for the Women’s Power League of Alaska and the Berkeley Center for Law and Business.

Smith was inducted into the Anchorage ATHENA Society in 2022 and was honored as a YWCA Woman of Achievement in 2020, recognition that reflects her professional expertise and commitment to the community.

Smith earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law and completed her undergraduate studies at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (B.S.F.S.). She is a graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School.
