GCI launches 5G mobile service in King Cove and Chignik Bay!
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – GCI’s 5G mobile service is now available in King Cove and Chignik Bay! The launch of the cutting-edge wireless service and unlimited mobile data brings residents of the small Alaska Peninsula communities the same lightning-fast data speeds and reliable voice service as customers in Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city.
In addition to 5G mobile service, King Cove and Chignik Bay residents also have access to 2.5 gig residential internet speeds through GCI’s Aleutians Fiber Project.
“We’re very excited to bring GCI’s 5G mobile service and unlimited data to King Cove and Chignik Bay,” said GCI Marketing Director Leah Scholz. “This is a huge deal! In addition to faster mobile data speeds this upgrade increases the included mobile data for customers on Unlimited mobile plans. For example, customers on our popular Peak Unlimited Mobile plan will automatically be upgraded from 12GB to 50GB of high-speed data.”
The availability of both urban level consumer internet speeds and 5G mobile service means customers in both communities can now take full advantage of GCI+ plans, which combine Alaska’s fastest home internet and unlimited mobile service with plans starting at just $99.99 per month. Upgrades for speed and unlimited usage are available at three additional levels.
The foundation for urban-level connectivity in the community and throughout the region was built through GCI’s Aleutians Fiber Project. Once complete, the project will bring fiber-optic connectivity to 13 communities on Kodiak Island, the Alaska Peninsula, and the south side of the Aleutian Chain.
“My hometown used to have only one landline phone, now we have some of the best connectivity, not just in Alaska, but in the nation,” said GCI Rural Affairs Senior Director Jenifer Nelson, who was born and raised in King Cove. “Access to this level of mobile and internet service is truly transformative. This has been years in the making and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of the team that is working to close the digital divide throughout the region where I grew up.”
GCI was the first provider in Alaska to launch true 5G coverage in 2020. Today, GCI offers 5G mobile service in more than 20 communities, ranging from Alaska’s most populous areas, like Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, to some of its most remote, like Akutan, Bethel, Unalaska, Nome and Kotzebue.
