GCI supports Haines ball field upgrades, benefiting local youth and families

Upgrades will improve safety and accessibility for Haines Little League and the broader community

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – GCI has contributed $33,900 to the Haines Borough in Southeast Alaska to support much-needed improvements to two local ball fields, helping ensure safe, accessible recreational spaces for the community and local youth athletics.

The contribution will fund repairs and upgrades to the fields, including resurfacing, fencing repairs, safety enhancements and new seating. The improvements will take place during the season which starts June 26.

“These fields mean a lot to the Haines community; they’re where kids play, families gather and neighbors come together,” said Tiffany Vassar, GCI’s Senior Program Manager of Contributions & Events. “We’re proud to support improvements that will help keep them safe, welcoming and ready for the community to enjoy for years to come.”

The improvements will directly benefit Haines Little League, a local nonprofit that relies on the fields for practices, games and community events. Founded in 2000 as a small tee ball program, Haines Little League has grown into an important part of the community that has served more than 2,600 local youth to-date. The league now welcomes approximately 100 participants annually, fostering a love of the game, teamwork, and community connection.

The league is led by a dedicated seven-member board made up entirely of women, all of whom have children currently participating in the program. Several board members also played in the league themselves and understand firsthand how meaningful those opportunities can be for young people.

“The ball fields are an important part of life in Haines,” said Haines Mayor Tom Morphet. “A lot of kids have grown up playing here, and a lot of families and volunteers have put time and care into keeping them going. These repairs will help make sure the fields are in good shape and ready for the community to use for years to come.”
