GCI supports Iḷisaġvik College Pre-College Summer Camp with $10,000 donation
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – GCI, Alaska’s largest telecommunications company, recently made a $10,000 contribution to Iḷisaġvik College and its Pre-College Summer Camp program. The donation ensures students have access to a learning environment that preserves and strengthens Iñupiat culture, language and traditions.
All camps are offered free of charge and introduce students to the idea of college and career planning. The camp also helps students develop crucial skills, such as time management, reading comprehension, public speaking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
“We’re proud to support Alaska students’ journeys as they work toward their educational and professional goals,” said Vice President of GCI Healthcare & Education Annette Jones. “In partnership with Iḷisaġvik College, GCI is working hard to support efforts to provide students on Alaska’s North Slope with valuable educational opportunities and help close the digital divide.”
This summer, students will be able to learn more about hunting and wilderness safety, driver’s education, construction, sports and leadership, Iñupiaq language, skin mask making, baby Kamipiak (Maklak) making, and more.
“For over a decade, Iḷisaġvik College has been providing summer camp opportunities for North Slope and rural students all over Alaska to introduce students to career pathways and college life. This program is free to students, and it is because of our generous donors that Iḷisaġvik can provide such fun and educational experiences to students,” said Iḷisaġvik College President Justina Wilhelm. “Each year, GCI’s donation has a direct impact on our students seeking hands-on and real-life experience in their chosen field of study, while gaining important experience both culturally and in their future professions. Quyanaqpak, GCI, for your 2022 donation and for previous years’ donations, too. Iḷisaġvik and our wonderful students are grateful!”
In 2021, nearly 270 students attended Ilisagvik College’s Pre-College Programming Summer Camps, which were offered in Utqiagvik, Wainwright, Atqasuk, Point Lay, Point Hope, Nuiqsut, and Anaktuvuk Pass.
GCI has a long history of supporting education in Alaska. Over the past 20 years, GCI has awarded over $6 million in scholarships to hundreds of Alaska students attending accredited colleges and vocational/trade schools across the nation. In 2022, GCI has committed to award $100,000 in scholarships to Alaska students, through the GCI Scholarship Program and Alaska Pacific University’s GCI Donovan Walsh Scholarship.
