GCI supports Yukon River communities on heels of dismal salmon season
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Historically low Yukon River salmon runs this year prompted GCI, Alaska’s largest telecommunications company, to purchase $25,000 worth of salmon for residents of the Interior to supplement their poor subsistence harvest. The salmon will be distributed by the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) who hosted a trip to Yukon River communities in July for Alaska nonprofits, government agencies, and corporations.
“The event hosted by TCC helped underscore the urgency of the situation. In each community we visited, the record-low Yukon salmon returns were the number one concern,” said GCI Chief Communications Officer Heather Handyside. “Strong salmon runs are not only essential for subsistence but also define Alaska Native culture along the Yukon and across the state. We’re pleased to join the State’s efforts to provide some relief to families in the Interior this winter.”
GCI’s purchase of 8,000 pounds of salmon is the latest round of support for Interior Alaska. So far this year, the State of Alaska has coordinated the donation and distribution of more than $100,000 worth of salmon to the region with State funding and contributions by Alaska companies.
“Alaskans never cease to amaze me with their ability to come together and help each other in times of immense need,” said Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy. “It’s encouraging to see statewide partners and contributors help distribute salmon to Alaska’s communities along the Yukon who rely on the river as a major way of life. This past summer, my administration coordinated the distribution of wild Alaska salmon to the Yukon River region for those who faced economic impacts from the pandemic and the poor salmon runs. Once again, Alaskans have risen to the occasion to help those in need – without replacing the cultural importance of the fishing season. I applaud GCI and their efforts to support our rural communities.”
TCC is an Alaska Native nonprofit corporation representing more than 40 communities and has been a leading voice for the Interior during the emerging crisis. TCC has been leading efforts to support communities across the region.
“Our communities depend on the subsistence harvest and in years where salmon returns are low, it puts an incredible strain on those living in the region. We’re glad that Alaskans have stepped up to show support during this difficult time for many of our communities. Enaa baasee’ – thank you very much,” said TCC’s Chief Chairman PJ Simon.
