Strengthening Alaska communities through holiday giving and connection
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — At GCI, connection goes beyond technology, it’s about creating stronger communities. This holiday season, GCI is continuing its tradition of giving back through continued partnerships with United Way of Anchorage, Food Bank of Alaska, and new collaborations with community groups chosen by GCI business resource groups.
“We love this time of year because there are so many opportunities to show up for our communities across the state and to help build a stronger Alaska for everyone,” said Tiffany Vassar, GCI Gives contributions and events senior manager.
For nearly a decade, GCI has supported Food Bank of Alaska’s Thanksgiving Blessing, a program that unites volunteers, donors, and community members to bring joy and relief to thousands of families. The Thanksgiving Blessing is expected to serve thousands of families across Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley this year. GCI provides employees with 16 hours of paid volunteer time annually. Many employees use some of these hours to support meaningful causes like volunteering at the Food Bank of Alaska during the holidays.
“Partnerships like the one we have with GCI are critical in helping us reach more families during the holiday season,” said Cara Durr, chief executive officer at Food Bank of Alaska. “By providing matching donations, they not only encourage others to give, but also amplify the impact of every dollar raised.”
GCI is also proud to support the work of United Way of Anchorage through a workplace campaign each year. In 2024, GCI employees raised more than $151,000 to support United Way of Anchorage programs.
GCI’s business resource groups are also giving back. Each BRG selected an Alaska community partner that will receive a $1,000 donation.
- BLACQ (Black Leaders and Allies Championing eQuality) is supporting GAP Giving Day at the Fairview Recreation Center, which will provide toys, clothing, and holiday treats to families in need.
- GWeN (GCI Women’s Network) partnered with Covenant House Passage House to assist young mothers and their children.
- IBRG (Indigenous Business Resource Group) is donating to ANSEP to inspire and empower Alaska Native students pursuing careers in STEM.
- PRIDE (LGBTQ+ Employees and Allies Group) is donating to Choosing Our Roots to support safe housing for LGBTQ+ youth facing homelessness.
Alaska’s nonprofits are addressing the state’s most pressing challenges, from improving access to essential resources to fostering learning opportunities for students. Through their dedicated efforts, these organizations are making our communities a better place to live, work, and thrive. GCI is driven by its belief that meaningful connections have the power to transform lives. Supporting these initiatives through resources, technology, and funding will help make this holiday season a little brighter for Alaskans.
