Supporting Our Communities

GCI donates nearly $100,000 to 14 nonprofits focused on suicide prevention in Alaska

14 organizations received grants ranging from $2,000 to $20,000

ANCHORAGE, Alaska  This Suicide Prevention Month, 14 organizations have even more support for their community projects to prevent suicides in Alaska thanks to GCI's Suicide Prevention Fund. Each year, GCI donates money to nonprofits in Alaska that put in tireless work to prevent suicides in their communities. GCI's giving is targeted to organizations that serve small, rural communities in Alaska, as well as larger programs that reach Alaskans in bigger cities. Since the fund's first year, GCI has given more than $500,000 to local organizations for suicide prevention efforts.

"We received very impressive grant applications this cycle," said Jen Nelson, Senior Manager of Corporate Communications and Community Engagement, and one of the founders of the GCI Suicide Prevention Fund. "But what stood out was the need to connect with Alaskans at every age group, so they feel supported when it comes to mental wellness in our state. Through the work our fund recipients have done, we know we've moved the needle on suicide prevention. But we also know there's more work to be done. These 14 organizations will keep that important momentum going and I look forward to hearing about their progress in the coming year."

GCI awarded grants ranging from $2,000 to $20,000. The following nonprofits received funding:

  • Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association, Inc.
  • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
  • Bethel Community Services Foundation, Inc.
  • Camp Fire Alaska
  • Central Council Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska
  • Gold Star Peak, Inc.
  • Maniilaq Association
  • Metlakatla Indian Community
  • MyHouse
  • NAMI Juneau
  • Native Village of Port Heiden
  • OPT-In Kiana
  • Soldotna Area Senior Citizens, Inc.
  • Team Red, White & Blue

Through the grant application process, the recipients demonstrated the proven success of and future plans for deploying suicide prevention strategies that are customized to address needs specific to Alaska, especially in rural areas. The organizations span a wide range of target audiences, from seniors to youth, LGBTQ+ to veterans, and Alaskans in some of the most remote communities in the state.
