Unalaska mobile service better than ever with launch of new GCI 5G site
UNALASKA, Alaska — GCI’s 5G mobile coverage just got even better in Unalaska, one of the most-remote communities in the nation and home to one of the nation’s leading fishing ports. The brand-new wireless site, located near Lear Road, is GCI’s fourth in Unalaska and fortifies its 5G footprint in the community’s inland roads and neighborhoods. It comes on the heels of a $4.9 million mobile wireless upgrade that helped deliver 5G in the community in August.
GCI launched 5G in Unalaska in mid-August, bringing customers in the community lightning-fast data speeds and even more reliable voice service.
“The Lear Road wireless site in Unalaska has been a long time coming,” said GCI Wireless Program Manager Chris Galipeau. “For several years, we’ve been looking for a place suitable to build out this new site to strengthen and expand our wireless coverage in the area. I’m proud of the dedication and coordination of teams across GCI to get this site on air. It’s a big win for GCI customers in Unalaska.”
GCI was the first provider in Alaska to launch true 5G coverage, which first launched in Anchorage in 2020. The company also offers 5G mobile service in Fairbanks, Palmer, Wasilla, Juneau, Eagle River and Girdwood.
In addition to 5G wireless service, Unalaska residents also enjoy the benefits of 2.5 gig internet speeds that GCI launched in the community late last year through the company’s Aleutians Fiber Project. The Aleutians Fiber Project is a two-part project to bring 2,500 Mbps internet speeds and affordable, unlimited data plans to a dozen Aleutian, Alaska Peninsula, and Kodiak Island communities, closing the digital divide and bringing digital equity to the region.
